This affordable, widescreen GPS leads the way with voiced directions that speak the street names and has
optional
MSN Direct services to keep you
informed. Included is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that makes it easy for driving or walking. You can
carry the Garmin Nuvi 255w in your pocket or purse.
The 255w updates your position more often, which makes for smoother graphics of the vehicle
moving on the display screen. The display is clear, vivid and bright, even in the sun. There is a
small arrow in the upper left corner that shows upcoming turns and the distance to it. It lets you know if the
road splits and which way to go.
The "Where Am I" feature helps you find closest hospital, police station and gas station
etc.
You won't have to look at your speedometer as your current speed and the speed limit of
the road is displayed, which is great in unfamiliar areas.
You can see the names of the roads your passing so if it's unmarked you will know which one it
is.
If you miss a turn the Garmin Nuvi 255w recalculates your positon. There is also a Detour
Feature so in case of an accident ahead you can take the back roads.
Travel tools include the JPEG Picture Viewer, A World Travel Clock with time zones, currency
converter, measurement converter, calculator and more.
With the Photo Navigation you can download pictures from Garmin Connect Photos and get Geo-tagged Photos to this unit and
navigate to that photo's location, but you are better off by choosing the "where to " address
feature.
At Garmin Garage, you can download animated
vehicles that show your location on the map for free.
The Garmin Lock, an anti-theft feature is good but you will want to hide it out of site as this
electronic is the most common stolen item from cars.
There are optional Plug-In MicroSD preloaded cards like Garmin Travel Guides for details on
certain attractions. For Europe and other places get a preloaded SD card at
Garmin International.
Comes preloaded with POIs like hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs and more. You can also
enter custom POIs like school zones and lets you set alerts to warn you of the coming POI.
Garmin Nuvi 255W Postitives and reasons to choose this
model
One of the best in it's class, affordable and
very user friendly, great for the older or non techy types and with such
basic features it really doesn't require the manual. (but be sure to update before you
use it at Garmin website.)
Nice screen size, easy to see and loud enough to
hear and understand. You can also find other voices to upload if you don't like
the one you hear and an animated vehicle at Garmin Garage.
You can choose between a standard keyboard (abcd) or a qwerty keyboard to
type in your addresses.
There are some good websites for POIs- one is the Garmin website or do a Google search. The
POI loader software can also load your custom POIs
If you buy a refurbished one call Garmin Customer Service and they should give you a free
map update. You may have to wait on hold for a long time, be patient. Results may vary with refurbished,
so beware. Also see:
